"Puppet in a box", foldable toy-theatre

Puppet Theatre workshop for adults

Coordination: Katarína Caková

25 - 31 August

Duration: 30 Hours
Timeline: 10.30 – 14.00 & 17.00 – 19.30
Language: English

Limited places.

The workshop addresses itself to everyone, regardless of experience in puppetry.

In this workshop we will look at several concepts of the portable travelling puppet-mini-theatre and what are the benefits of each of them and we will build a toy theatre following the traditional Czech model which once had been so popular it had been dubbed a family theatre (as the design of famous artists were copied and mass produced so every family could have one). Nowadays it regains its popularity among puppeteers for the rising need of small-scale productions and unpretentious perhaps even semi-punk voice on the scene.

One of my favourite things about this stage is that it can be folded into an easily transportable box.

The aim of the workshop is for each participant to create a tiny show (or a small gig, that may be a base of the future show). We will build the stage, the puppet(s) and its universe. I will show you several techniques that you might decide to implement (or not) including stage elements, shadow screen or crankie screen, curtain mechanism and some simple lighting ideas. For puppets you can choose between articulated paper puppets, found objects and simple puppet on wire made with fabric and worbla, that I will help you make.

Every participant will build the stage that folds into a portable box, stage elements and articulated puppets.
